Vs Seeker

First introduced in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, the Vs Seeker a key item used to locate trainers you have already battled who are eligible to battle again. When the Vs Seeker is used, all surrounding Pokemon trainers visible on your screen are alerted that you want to battle them. The Vs Seeker will only function outside - it won't work in caves or buildings. Use the rule of thumb that if you can't use fly, you can't use the Vs Seeker.

After the Vs Seeker has been used, it must be recharged before it can be employed again. To recharge the Vs Seeker you must walk 100 steps. The Vs Seeker can lose effect on trainers in three ways: when the trainer has been battled, when you leave the route the Vs Seeker was used on, or when the Vs Seeker is reset by walking 100 steps within the route. If the Vs Seeker is used before its batteries are fully charged, instead of it functioning you will be told how many steps are required before it will work again.

The Vs Seeker is arguably the best way to level your Pokemon up to level 100 besides battling the Elite Four over and over again. When you first face trainers with the Vs Seeker, their Pokemon will be at lower levels, such as Level 31, but if you keep facing them, their Pokemon will eventually max out at Level 60. This is useful since you will gain more experience and prize money as the level of their Pokemon goes up.

The Vs Seeker is obtained from a girl in the Vermilion City Pokemon Center. How the Vs Seeker works is if a trainer wants to battle you, a speech bubble with two exclamation marks will appear above their head (!!). Trainers then proceed to jump up and down to remind you who is eligible for battle. Trainers who you haven't battled before will display a red exclamation mark (!) and do not jump up and down. Trainers who don't want to battle you at the moment will have a blue speech bubble with a white "X" above their head.

In the 4th Generation, the Vs Seeker is obtained by talking to Dawn/Lucas on Route 207 after your first trip down Cycling Road. When the Vs Seeker is used, a speech bubble with two red exclamation marks (!!) appears above the head of trainers who want to battle. The trainers then walk in circles until they have been battled. Unlike the previous generation, if a trainer isn't interested in battling, they simply do nothing.
